This paper provides pre-reading for an FCDO conference ‘Building women’s economic empowerment into climate transitions’ at Wilton Park on 18 to 20 March 2024. It forms a rapid review of existing work in this area, including existing evidence reviews and mixed-methods studies. The report is structured around the six conference sessions and was written to inform the session discussions for a range of participants from different technical and institutional backgrounds.

The South Sudan Humanitarian Assistance and Resilience Programme (SSHARP) aims to meet humanitarian needs and reduce dependency by integrating humanitarian and resilience programming in areas of high vulnerability. It focuses on strengthening food security and nutrition, improving adaption to the effects of climate change, and providing protection services especially for women and girls. It seeks to improve coordination between humanitarian and resilience responses, focusing on more sustainable approaches where possible.

This report written by Yue Cao and Beatrice Tangjanco in 2022 provides an overview of climate mitigation and adaptation solutions commonly used in Africa and analyses of which solutions would be more appropriate for MSMEs. African micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) have a significant role to play in addressing the continent’s climate mitigation and adaptation challenges. They represent more than 90% of businesses on the continent and employ about 60% of workers. In Sub-Saharan Africa, there are an estimated 44 million MSMEs, 97% of which are considered micro-enterprises.

This report presents a Gender Equality, Disability and Social Inclusion (GEDSI) analysis for the Ocean Country Partnership Programme (OCPP) in the seafood sector in Bangladesh. Following an assessment by the Independent Commission for Aid Impact in 2023, which rated OCPP as "unaware" on the GEDSI Responsiveness Continuum, this analysis aims to enhance understanding of vulnerable groups in Bangladesh’s coastal areas and identify opportunities for more GEDSI-sensitive programming.

The role of development finance institutions in addressing food security in vulnerable contexts
This report asks what more can be done to address food security in low-income economies that are frequently subjected to conflict, political instability, macroeconomic imbalances and natural disasters. The report focuses on 14 countries: the 10+1 group, which includes 10 countries –Afghanistan, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria and Yemen – and 1 region: Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali and Niger.

This WOW Helpdesk query identifies potential economic opportunities for urban women and youth in the green-growth and low-carbon sectors of the economy in Mozambique. A desk review of literature on green growth and green jobs and skills for urban women and youth was complemented by interviews with one key informant based in Mozambique. The evidence was presented and discussed at a consultation with representatives from FCDO and MUVA.

This report provides a rapid review of the emerging evidence on best practice of disability inclusion in nature-based solutions programming.There is an increasing focus on Nature-Based Solutions (NbS) to address the climate crisis. Whilst there is increasing awareness of the importance of disability inclusion in climate action, there is limited evidence available on disability inclusion and nature-based solutions programming.
